BBC Music Day culminates in a live gala concert from City Halls in Glasgow presented by Katie Derham and Ken Bruce, which is simulcast on Radio 2, Radio 3, Radio Scotland and the Asian Network. The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra is joined by an exciting cross-genre line-up of artists including tenor Noah Stewart, the violinist Jack Liebeck, pop legends Lulu and Deacon Blue, Bhangra artist Jaz Dhami, Scots folk star Claire Hastings, harpist Catrin Finch and jazz pianist Jamie Cullum. They perform music with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Richard Balcombe, from classical repertoire to film music, jazz to rock and folk music to Jaz Dhami.

As I said in the other thread this looks to me like a very dumbed down and cut down attempt at a re-invention of what was done in "Music Live" in 2000. Very poor fare compared with what was offered then.

I (or FoR3 on that occasion) asked on the R3 Facebook page whether it would be possible to have 2hrs 33 secs of silence instead. No one replied (AD is on leave at present btw).

My guess is that this is the idea of the Radio 2 Controller, Bob Shennan, in his capacity as BBC Director of Music, charged with coordinating 'music' broadcasts on radio and television. It could be an attempt to get round the BBC Trust's requirement* that other services, with bigger audiences than Radio 3, should also help to 'deliver the great works of classical music' to ALL audiences. Instead of which they're delivering emetic music broadcasts to Radio 3.

* We note, however, that it is not the sole responsibility of Radio 3 to deliver the great works of classical music and other musical genres to all audiences. The BBC has an overall responsibility for this and there are many services with a role to play in achieving this ambition [...]

I did say on their Facebook page that there was a bit of 'run-of-the-mill' classical music (apart from the Candide Overture, that is - a Breakfast favourite) but that they would probably play it backwards. For info:

The Asian Network isn't broadcasting "all this" - just Jaz Dhami's performance.

As for the "Asian listenership", some Asian listeners listen to Radio 3 and some non-Asian listeners listen to the Asian Network.

So, in one cleverly worded gesture, BBC Management drives more R3 listeners to access the internet classical music station of their choice, thus reducing listener numbers to R3 even more, and helping them to discover hitherto unsuspected riches elsewhere.

You couldn't make it up.
