Maybe, but I thought Ian McMillan made a better fist of it as sub but then he is a more regular radio presenter.

Yes and he clearly writes his (highly intelligent , witty and literate ) scripts . I get the impression Roddy was winging it a bit ….

Job done @RGCWbaritone. It's quite tiring this broadcasting lark.

Perhaps it was stolen before the end of the programme?

Screen on the left looks a bit like the forum, doesn't it?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

We used to get regular BBC visitors but not so much now (if ever). I haven't been clear whether it was the ending of FoR3 activity or whether a diktat went out from above forbidding checking the forum while working from a BBC building

Do you remember that time, going back maybe thirty years or so, that R3 suddenly went off-air because the presenter had spilt his tea into the desk?

Tom Crowe? I do remember a colleague spilling a can of coke down one of the modern flat desks (modern for 1980) with the white linear faders that will be familiar to any one who has been in a modern studio. Coke is the worst thing of all - much worse than water. It took ages to clean.
Up until the early eighties a lot of broadcasting desks had rotary faders on a panel at right angles to a flat desk . It was impossible to spill anything down them. You also had a nice flat desk to put your coffee on , script , knitting etc.
                        Such is progress ….

I can't remember who it was but it might've been Tom Crowe or maybe Chris de Souza. I wish I'd been recording when it happened. After a few minutes of silence a breathless presenter came on air to explain what had happened and that he'd had to re-locate back to an old studio from whence they'd not long come to the new studio he'd just ruined. Priceless!

I can just imagine the mess Coke would've made. I don't drink the stuff but have used it to clean up rusty metal things...

Quite a lot of audio and video tech areas ban all drinks apart from water or at the very least don’t allow it near or on the gear. Or they ask production to sit at the back on a sofa out of the way. For some reason there always a fruit bowl .Anyway the sugar in coke makes it very difficult to clean off I’m told - ditto a heavily sugared coffee. Thing is though a lot of these presenting gigs last two to three hours - they have to have a drink to keep going !

He tried the red button, but I notice there's a very prominent green button staring at him on the left. That's positively begging to be pressed. I wonder ..... is it an emergency 'get-me-outa-here' ejector seat button?

Edit:- Incidentally I thought he was great. Rather charming.

The “green button” on the extreme left is in fact a green cue light. It’s controlled by the studio manager or audio supervisor, or dubbing mixer (depending on the location) to cue the talent to speak. The more experienced presenters take their own cues but even they will know that when the green light comes on the mic is open and it’s time to avoid profanities or a coughing fit !
