Norman Lumsden, who was a member of the English Opera Group and the original Quince in Britten's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', was born 102 years ago today. But, as Martin Handley reminded us, he became much more famous years later as 'J R Hartley' in the Yellow Pages TV commercial. What more fitting way to mark his birthday than with Bing Crosby and Louis Armstrong singing 'Gone Fishin'?

Purely personal, but I find I can more or less cope with Breakfast when Petroc is on. I wonder if he is good for ratings , compared to other presenters .

It was suggested (in an article about CB-H) that CB-H boosted figures when she took over from SM-P ('Figures released this week, showed that the breakfast show has added 130,000 new listeners since the arrival of Ms Burton-Hill,'), but I doubt that presenters, especially those sharing duties, make a lot of difference. The weekly figure is a the average of 12-13 weeks; and in any case, I just don't think that listeners who want their fix in the early morning go to CFM every other week or so, or stop listening until their favourite presenter returns.

It should be said that last quarter's figure, 636k, is a usual ballpark figure, albeit at the higher end: nothing remarkable. Radio 3 overall, yet again, failed to pass the 2 million mark.

Correction: I was looking at the previous quarter's figure. Breakfast didn't have a reach of 636k, but the rather less good 579k last quarter. A lot of the listening across the board seems to have been down last quarter so there's probably no reason to point at Radio 3's performance in particular. However, for a Proms quarter, it looks like the third lowest (1.934m) since 1999, when these comparable records began.

Very probably. So one can feed Radio 3's results into the data base without coming to any particular conclusions about them, without more information …

Personally, I think that 'Breakfast' is there for those who don't want to be bombarded with 'heavy' music (even in terms of length) first thing in the morning. There's always your record collection to delve into if you want to hear a full 45-minute symphony at 7am. There is an off-switch on your radio. Use it if need be.

After a prolonged 'defection' to Radio 4, I'm now firmly back in the 'Breakfast' fold. The choice of words and music as we approach 11.11.2018 has at times been inspired and deeply moving. I've just been listening to the words of Rupert Brooke spoken by Tim Piggott-Smith and sung by Roderick Williams. Unlike certain other presenters, Petroc doesn't seem to feel the need to prove anything.
