Interesting listening experience this morning.

Got woken up at 7 as usual by my alarm radio.

Breakfast on 3. Dukas' Sorcerer's Apprentice. Used to like that piece (before R3 started playing it at every available opportunity.)

Switched over to Radio 4. Today. Chinese stock market problems, and how it's threatening a new global economic meltdown; Dame Sally Davies on how even minimal amounts of alcohol increase risks of cancer; Inverurie in Aberdeenshire washed away by the latest instalment of the monsoon.

Switched back to R3. Peer Gynt.

Switched off.

I would recommend either not listening to or reading the news, or at least having it on strict rations , and accessed under your own direction.
It really is presented in a very corrosive way.

I guess that the trouble with being woken up by the radio is that whatever comes out of the speaker tends to go straight into one's brain, without much in the way of censorship or sanitization.

Maybe it would be safer to be woken up by a CD player.

heard Petrock saying something this morning about a 'new' English national anthem in parliament or summat.

More importantly, has this been discussed here on the forum? can't seem to find owt...

I appreciate that R3 has to cater for all tastes but I have to confess I am not a lover of modern music so I've been hiding away from Breakfast and its New Year New Music and just as I thought it was safe to come out again it's Music in My Lifetime and some of it I have listened to for the first, and last, time. Is R3 going increasingly modern now? I'm afraid it's not for me, especially first thing in the morning, although I have tried. Good for those who like it though I guess.

My vote would be for Billy Connolly's suggestion that we should use the theme tune of The Archers as a National Anthem.

It's supposed to be in place of 'God Save the Queenie' and I think the favourite at the mo is 'Jerusalem' innit. Apparently it's for sporting events where 'England' teams play, so that basically brings it down for football and rugby cos usually other sports are more sensible and have 'GB' teams.

- I'm quite an admirer of about 90% of his work. His Big Send Off a couple of years ago was one of the best things I've ever seen on telly (especially the bit about the Moslem funeral director who gives his services free of charge - including to Jewish families; a fantastic insight into real Islam and a necessary antidote to the murderers who most frequently appear in the media who appropriate the name of Islam themselves for themselves.)
