It's time for gardening leave to be awarded to CB-H. She's excelled herself in being deliberately annoying.

Besides, we are falling into the same trap, by regarding the presenter as someone of great importance. I've always taken the opposite view. Indeed on the OPs for Proms concert threads, I cut and paste information from the Radio 3 Schedule on the BBC website, apart from the names of the presenters, which is of little relevance.

I suggest today's outburst wasn't the boss's decree, but the presenter making her personal point.

Are my ears mistaken or did I hear "Ferry Across The Mersey" just before 9am this morning? I know much has been written about this "dumbing down" of the most important classical music station in the UK but surely this is enough? I mean, I do like the song BUT this is NOT the place. And I also do not agree with people who say the Proms should include all types of music, as it is the largest classical music festival in the UK. I wonder if Glastonbury would feature various chamber ensembles or orchestras?

Oh and it also appears that posts on here can be moderated in the same way that the original Radio 3 messageboard used to do. In which case, where do serious classical music lovers vent their feelings?

This was the point I was making.

I believe that this last question's been aired on here before and perhaps it is at least in part because of this that next year's Glastonbury's to feature all six Ferneyhough quartets played by the Arditti Quartet. I hope that it doesn't rain...

Seriously, though, whilst I do not disagree with you about certain repertoire now being featured on occasion at the Proms, the question remains as to what a "classical music festival" actually is or should be and what kinds of music might reasonably be deemed to fit into one; if Hildegard and Pérotin, Tallis and Byrd, Gershwin and Beethoven, Mahler and Xenakis, Bach and Boulez are all generally consiedered to be Prommable, it's clear that the scope of that festival is already cornucopic without it having to embrace certain of what some regard as the more questionable items that have been performed in recent seasons.

Probably not, but that's a poor argument. Glastonbury is not the equal and opposite of the Proms. They are not Yin and Yang.

No, of course they're not, but since the answer to that particular Glastonbury question is so obviously that this festival never features anything of the kind, there could quite reasonably be an argument about what should or should not be presented at the Proms; Yin and Yang they may not be, but they do have noticeably different agendas where repertoire is concerned.

                          Hiya Victor Meldrew II,

I wonder what would happen if Radio 1 suddenly played a Beethoven string quartet. It just would not happen!

Radio 1 probably wouldn't play Ferry Across the Mersey either for that matter!

I suggest Op95 played in full - about time they played some proper music.

No you are not mistaken - I just checked!

CB-H claims that she thought it wasn't suitable, but thousands of listeners told her it was.

(Terrible song. It's bad enough that I have to have it played at me every time I cross the river on a ferry.)
