indeed! ... listening to R3 in a hotel room is instructive; i realised it does not matter which music is played ... it is the familiarity and the illusion of personal contact ... this experience was akin to re-reading Nausea in a millisecond ....

now that the universities are businesses with managers with agency capture and bonuses on their minds, what hope for Aunt? the posh boys and city squids are winning .....

[but see this informative piece in the NS about Germany and Tuition Fees

According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

They started playing what I thought was the little band in Don Giovanni playing Non piĆ¹ andrai. But apart from saying that it was 'Mozart quoting Mozart' at the beginning, the back announcement was on the lines that if you wrote as much music as Mozart you could be forgiven for 'reusing' some of your material. I wondered if it was me who misidentified it. If not, I wouldn't have called this an example of 'reusing' his material. I heard no explanation.
Whatever, they either obviously missed Mozart's very pertinent joke of having Non piu andrai played at the background in Don Giovanni (Non piu being the most anti-militaristic military march in history I think), or missing the point of the popularity of Non piu, which did Mozart decide to incorporate the tune in his dances for Carnaval 1791, in his Counterdance KV609/1. Reusing: yes. Just by chance by lack of inspiration: most certainly not.

Dumbing down that's called, or must we say: not interested at all in what they are broadcasting?

But that may have been what they played - that's why I wanted to check. I didn't catch any further reference explaining what it was.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

The iPlayer version is up now, and it was described as a 'cheeky little Kontratanz'. So it wasn't the Don Giovanni extract (I was engaged in my physical jerks at the time!) but it was only introduced as 'Mozart quotes Mozart'.

... perhaps this may help :

must say that letting the public more or less choose the playlist leads to a more interesting programme I suppose these days someone doesn't have to run off to the gramophone library to find something, they just press a button on their computer and hey-presto

Up to a point, I think. PT does occasionally refer to a listener's suggestion and then say that they'll try to dig it out for a later programme. Which could, I suppose, be code for 'fit it into a later programme.'

PT said this morning that the computer had played the wrong track.

I thought blaming the computer was something they'd been forced to give up in the '80s.

Skellers is on fire this morning - he won't progress if he keeps quietly mocking the format, but he's all the more fun to listen to than certain others.

I agree with you...up to a point. But, unfortunately, it seems to me that in general the listeners choices fall into the catagory of " I know what I like. But seeing that I don't know much, I don't like much". Rather like the presenters/producers in fact.

Wasn't the Georgian Soc featured by Petroc this week? Good on them getting on twice for the publicity....
