I don't even think I would say that any piece of music 'blew my mind' (but I'm not quite sure what it means). Sometimes I've found a piece of music riveting my attention so that I listen with great concentration. So I could say 'music that riveted my attention', if that's any good ...
I guess some of those who say a piece of music 'blew my mind' were probably on something else at the time but maybe now say they did not inhale and blame the music!

I haven't heard every contribution but I expect a lot of them have been variations of "a piece that I first heard as a child and sparked my interest in/love of music".
Music, especially that of Vaughan Williams, has certainly changed, and I am convinced even saved,my life.

fair comment. Perhaps I take or have taken music too much for granted and I might not realise that until I was somehow deprived of music altogether [if that makes sense]. It is a comfort, a companion, an uplifter - but has one particular piece of music changed my life ? - perhaps I need to consider the question more deeply. Perhaps I'm taking the question too literally. I'm afraid just at the moment nothing really springs to mind as an answer.

          - I hope you feel moved to share your experiences with Clemmie (and all the Radio 3 listeners)

I have defected from Classic FM recently, so perhaps the dumbed down formula works. Even a dumbed down Radio 3 is an improvement on the CFM programmes and presenters - never mind the adverts.

It works for attracting Classic FM listeners, not for pleasing all Radio 3 listeners.

The BBC denies it's targeting the Classic FM audience. That may be true: they may be targeting other listeners but not have a very good aim.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Point of information: Is Johann Strauss II referred to ever as Johann Sebastian Strauss (he appears to have been Johann Baptist acc. to Wiki)? That's a new one for the auto generated playlists.
