I mentioned this to Roger Wright once, and he said something along the lines of: "It makes the presenters feel part of the programme" or perhaps "It gives them a sense of ownership" - as if (excuse me, presenters!) what the presenters 'feel' matters at all in this context. But it's all part of the branding of the product
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

It's all extremely sad if that's the case. Surely good line managers can look after such things?

You put your finger on the difference. I would understand that as slightly tongue in cheek humility. Not:

If you have been, thanks for listening to me, John Ebdon, back with you tomorrow. Join me [John Ebdon (optional)], same time, same place.

If people turned on just when he was finishing, it's no good saying 'Thanks for listening' to them, because they haven't been.

Please allow me to clarify, Don Petter. Richard Tarleton was not referring to himself, in #4147, but to HG, Honoured Guest, as a BBC insider.
I am not sure what "a BBC insider" might be, but it seems to carry negative connotations, and Richard Tarleton strikes me as a very positive contributor to these boards.

I was indeed referring to Honoured Guest, and thank you for the clarification Padraig. Apologies for the ambiguity in my post.

'You have either been listening to, or have just missed ...' Was it Beyond our Ken, or another of that family/period?

Well, it is with slightly tongue in cheek humility that I thank you for your earlier refernce to myself which I had failed to recognise at the time as a result of its grammatical ineptitude. But I'm not a BBC insider, babes.

Correct. Douglas Smith back announcing Beyond Our Ken.

Well, he did say 'But as a BBC insider I imagine the sort of individuality they personified would have been anathema to you' which seems pretty clear to me - Are you sure? Perhaps he can confirm or deny.

He has confirmed. Or rather denied. He made a grammatical error, though HG has also said he is NOT a BBC insider either. I had concluded that, as a now retired person, HG spent a lot of time on the internet finding out little nuggets of information that are there for anyone to see. He merely supports the BBC against all critics and may well have close connections with the BBC while not being, now, an 'insider'. Richard Tarleton definitely did NOT mean that he (Richard Tarleton) was a BBC insider; and he isn't.

Haaah! The Eternal Breakfast Debate .... :-)

"My CD of the week". Well I chose it and I've decided which tracks to play from it and I wrote all my scripts and chose all the other music and worked out all the timings - I've worked quite hard to make this the seamless smooth-running finished product that it is. I didn't just saunter into the studio 30 seconds before transmission in my bowtie and dinner jacket, with everything worked out and arranged for me. I'm not a mere continuity announcer you know.
