do the Breakfast and Choir statistics come from the same mystery source that we weren't allowed to know about on another thread ?

As someone equally keen on classical music, and, at the risk of sounding somewhat immodest, almost as good at is as her (I passed grade 8 organ aged 11, with distinction) but who grew up below the poverty line and went to a Bash Street comprehensive in south London (my father was killed in the Falklands when I was 10), I can assure you that being interested in classical music in that setting most certainly does mark you out as a weirdo - even among the teachers.

Of all the people I've ever met who have had a lifelong interest in classical music have one thing in common - they are far more wealthy than the general population. They range in age from 9 to 90, but they all have that in common. I think the dumbing down of music education in the comprehensive system (for my GCSE in music the set pieces to analyse were by Scott Joplin and Genesis - there was no Beethoven, Bach, Bruckner, etc.) has a lot to do with this.

Well I'm not, and by the sound of it the writer of that comment isn't, or at least wasn't wealthy when he/she first became interested.

I only skimmed the article as I with Breakfast, I am not interested in the drivel that comes out of her mouth. Her reference to listeners being weird is typical of someone who has an over exalted opinion of themselves.

This reminds me of management-speak in education. When there's a potentially unjustified complaint from a parent, the manager nevertheless jumps upon the innocent teacher; but when someone complains about the actual manager, the complainer is "a very strange person".

Maybe we too are giving CB-H too much credence? She is not important, but the music is.

I almost threw up at the smugness of it all. Her partner in the Diplomatic Service at the Palace, her mother round the corner to help out with the sprog and CB-H on a six-figure BBC salary and "we can't afford not to work?"
All part of the main stream media disassociation with the real world.
