And when did you hear an opus number, or Deutsch, of whatever number mentioned if not strictly necessary to identify a piece (and even then....)?

Steady on! That sort of thing might well frighten the horses.

Actually what you say is quite revealing. The fact that you only want to listen to bite sized single movement chunks and can't concentrate on anything longer than five minutes is a damning indictment of Wrecker Wright's much trumpeted fallacy that the Breakast format is building a new listenership.

Quite obviously, The New Listener is incapable of increasing their attention span to listen to complete works. Give him/her the theme from that advert or film and they're happy, but a whole symphony pur-lease - it's soooo boring!!!

Thing is, if you listen to your local student radio station, you discover that basic radio presentation isn't the great art that presenters and others might want us to think it is.
So, like other " Not so hard but lucrative and desirable jobs" the incumbents positions have to be justified. In this case its by mock complexity and pseudo knowledge, as well as celebrity culture, in order to convince us that a regular "non celebrity" presenter would be unable to deliver the ratings.

Good radio presentation, EG writing and presenting a decent " Discovering Music" is a REAL skill....and hence sidelined as it might show up the celebrity DJ's and their work?

But the Radio 3 presenters are hardly celebrities, are they. CB-H is known as a actress, but apart from that...

In the old days you'd have a long work eg Alpine Sym start at 7.05 - and enjoy the music in its glorious completeness - mind you don't try Maazel's otherwise the pips will be crashed at 8.00!

EA, were you referring to a post of mine that seems to have disappeared?

bloody odd, it DEFINITELY disappeared from my scree for a while. I checked about 4 times.

Hmm, and I was going to spend the evening (all of it) revisiting the Maazel with your review........

I've just had an email from the London Philharmonic saying I can listen free online to their Bruckner 3 of 14th March. And when I've listened I should let them know what I thought of the performance via facebook, twitter, google and soundcloud.
