Yes. All this unnecessary hyperbole is very irritating. In fact, all the talk is irritating, but matters just seem to get worse by the day, and a look at the newspapers used to make me groan when Andrew MacGregor presented the early morning programme twenty years ago. Newspapers are a personal thing anyhow, and listeners should not be bombarded with quotes from the Guardian and Independent all the time.

I've no axe to grind here - I'm generally left-wing, but if I do take a paper, which is rarely, I read The Times.

As I've said before, having the presenter read the headlines on the quarter hour is ridiculous, especially when they try to do it off the cuff, and it completely ruins the atmosphere as many have noted. And I heartily agree about CB-H's gushings. Not needed and I'm sure she's naturally more reserved. Terrible format.

Last year there was a thread titled “The bloody news” and you can probably guess the general drift of the content. Anyway it contained a contribution from EdgeleyRob. I have learned a lot about music from browsing through these forums but this post from ER taught me something which has been life-changing. I will always remember these two sentences:
“He said he never watched TV or read newspapers. When I asked him how he knew what was going on in the world, he replied that he didn't.”

From that moment on my life changed too. I now actively avoid the news and my mental health has benefitted as a result. I should have said this before now, but thank you ER for your post and for being so frank.

Interesting post, Wallace. One can certainly become "newsed out". I virtually never watch TV news or listen to R4 news. I detest rolling news channels (e.g. BBC News 24). Who on earth watches these - endless speculation by pundits about what might be going to happen - dreadful! I do agree there is too much news on Breakfast. If there has to be News, once an hour would do.

I know what you mean.
Its tough for weather forecasters to retain any gravitas these days.

Still, she IS multitalented, (she must be surely). Imagine how much unemployment she would cause if she was well connected ......

I wonder if Terry Wogan is her godfather, or something.
