My view is that the Breakfast programme will still be the Breakfast programme. Whatever your feelings, admiring or critical, about particular presenters, it will still be the same mess of pottage. And, yes, of course some people enjoy it. But in artistic, cultural and intellectual terms, it's the road to HELL. And professional standards for what they still advertise as 'Radio 3's classical breakfast show' can be frequently woeful.

I suppose that the good intention is that 'Breakfast' should be accessible to all, but of course, if no one turns up, it inevitably defeats the object. Perhaps this is actually the solution. Just don't turn up, although do we ultimately have a choice?

Yes, we have a choice and since the Breakfast reach last quarter was the lowest ever, presumably some people are choosing not to 'turn up'.

Surely....nobody decides at 0630-0900hrs suddenly to change their musical habits....especially a change of channel/wavelength....I don't decide to listen to something different until at least 1130hrs....goodluck SMP....

Well, what do we think of CB-H's first stint as the new presenter of Breakfast? I haven't tuned in this morning, but just checking the Twitter feed, I find that CB-H has been tweeting like crazy; it's a wonder she's found time to do any presenting!

One of her guests apparently got into Sibelius through "prog rock" (is that a landscape in Finland I wonder?). Among the musical fare this morning we've had Mother Goose; Vissi d'Arte; Haffner movement; and a "jazzy" take on the Bach chaconne.

Plus ca change.

Rationally, I suppose people first decide that what they habitually listen to has changed and they don't like it or they're just fed up with the same old same old. They then might look around for an alternative. If they enjoy what they're listening to, why would they look to change?

So, changing the presenter would not, in itself, encourage new people to listen (of course, they could bombard other services with C B-H trails - we know how much listeners appreciate that!).

I thought C B-H did well this morning! So much so that I sent her a text to tell her so! Anyone who can send me to work with the Mozart clarinet quintet on a day that involves the administration of several rectal suppositories deserves all the praise she can get.
