I would say that the average age of those at the local concerts of chamber music which I attend is probably in the low-to-mid 60s rather than the mid-to-high 50s.

Looking at TV Proms it often seem seems to me that the prommers are mostly middle aged men, whereas in films of the Proms from the 1960s they are (apparently) mostly student age.

Whe I mentioned to one of my sons that Ian Allan's specialist transport and military book shops had closed he said ' it's probably because their customers heve died' , and i had to admit that when I was in there the customers were mostly elderly men.

Much as I like Ian Skelly, I'm reserving judgment for now on him taking the Sunday morning slot. Despite its major deterioration I do still listen to Afternoon Concert at least in part several times a week and one can have too much of a good thing... Martin Handley was part of what made Sunday morning different for me*, and something to look forward to, as his voice was not only pleasant to my ears but less familiar, and there were features of the programme which I very much enjoyed. Whether they will be retained or changed and with what and to what extent remains to be seen.

          * yes ff I hear you muttering - presenters over content! Sorry but in this case it is a package - Sunday morning with MH and his choice of music pleases me, so I listen each week. Wrong sort of listener I know, from both the BBC and R3 purist POV, but a listener none the less.

Another listener of the 'wrong sort' here, but - like you - I shall give Mr S a try!

No need for people to be defensive. From the BBC's point of view you are definitely the right sort of listeners - people who enjoy programmes because they like the presenter!
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

The last time I enjoyed a programme because of the presenter was Lisa Rogers on Scrapheap Challenge.

Not defensive, just resigned to my lot of being the wrong sort in so many spheres of modern life! As far as the BBC is concerned I was thinking in terms of being the wrong age group - too old to be of interest or use - rather than whether I listen because of a given presenter. That approach only works up to a point in any case - I may like Ian Skelly, but in the case of Afternoon Concert that is not enough in itself to prevent me quite possibly giving up on the programme if it continues its current trajectory, since it is no longer what I expect or want.

Sorry - that was what I inferred from your message.
If, as I believe I read somewhere, the programme is moving north, the young lady who hosts Saturday's Breakfast would seem a logical choice to some.
Could the Bard of Barnsley not be persuaded to pop over to Salford Quays for the morning?

Agree in every respect save that I give the shambles that is Afternoon Concert a miss.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
