Ending Breakfast this morning was Bachianas Brasilieras No5 with saxophone replacing the usual soprano voice - call me old fashioned but I didn’t find that this really sounded good - any other views?

The idea itself isn’t new, but I have an aversion to the saxophone, so… hmm.

        So, no sax appeal then

I didn't think much of it but it wasn't anything to do with being old-fashioned. I lack the knowledge to say whether the arrangement had any technical merit or not, but I do know that after hearing the piece from early childhood on (my father had an LP which he played often) I didn't enjoy the sound of this version.

I suppose everyone in the world has heard Coleman Hawkins's Body and Soul, but it's always a pleasure to hear it again. Even the hearts of saxophobes would melt. Especially for you E A.

Mozart was said not to like the the flute or the harp (and, if I remember one quote, not the trumpet either). I didn't hear this piece but I'm with EA and cloughie in spirit. [Can only offer, pedant, that it's Bachianas Brasileiras not Bachianas Brasilieras. The R3 playlist got it wrong too (Brasilierias), in two places . The Portuguese diphthong is not the same as the Spanish one]
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Villa-Lobos seems to have been fond of the saxophone, and wrote several pieces which include it. There are published arrangements of Bachianos Brasileiras for saxophone.

Even Wayne Shorter has recorded it. But his version probably best reserved for Freeness rather than Breakfast.

Do BBC impartiality rules mean that, down the road, we get a double Martin? I do hope so.
