I'm sure you're right. Which is why all the announcers go along with this depressing downward spiral. But what makes it more depressing for me is the suspicion that some of them are 'true believers' (in the same way that I think Blair really 'believed' in the Iraq escapade). Or they've all been brainwashed into their current happyspeak...

Did not listen last night. Someone else I never tire of getting an earful of is Donald Macleod. 'Composer of the Week' is a wonderful 'template' of how to mix music and chat on Radio 3; made the more so by Mr Macleod's dulcet tones and dignified enthusiasm.

Even more depressing suspicion I have is that some of them have been specially brought in to ‘spearhead’ the current happyspeak…

Dear Sara / Rob / Martin

I look back with affection on my annual week in Skegness with Auntie Gladys at the Sunnyside Up B & B. Unfortunately on our last visit Auntie choked on a bone in her breakfast kipper and sadly passed away. Please would you play Siegfried's Funeral March to bring back memories of those happy times. Yours ever ......................

                    Dear Rob/Sara/Martin

I can clearly remember, back in the summer of 69, indulging in what could be deemed "Ugandan discussions" with a young lady upon a rocky outcrop on the North Cornish coast. I'd be delighted (although the young lady whose name I cannot now remember may have an alternative view) if you could play "Tintagel" as a souvenir....
                    Yours, in sport

Sorry for the misunderstanding. Might it have been John Shea? (Whoever it was, I share your enthusiasm. The quality of his voice reminded me of two earlier Radio 3 stalwarts: Tony Scotland and Cormack Rigby.)

                        Ofca - you were right.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Another journalistic contribution here. Perhaps as it is directed at R3 generally rather than just Breakfast, it should have had its own thread, but I couldn't be bothered to start one, and it does rehearse arguments familiar here.

aeolium - the Michael White piece in the Telegraph is a good summing up, I think.
Incidentally - there is a thread on this - on Platform 3 "feeble telegraph fluff"

So there is, vinteuil, though it might have been a bit harsh to include this article under a thread headed "feeble telegraph fluff" as this one seems quite a bit more substantial.
