Petroc seems to be getting in the last half hour all the things were not allowed over the weekend.

Welcome David. It was the rubbish that precedes Saturday Breakfast that I was more than happy to have omitted! It would be to think that someone up top realised that "Happy Harmonies" wasn't suitable this weekend (it, and its ilk, aren't at any time but that's another issue), but in fact it was just a happy benefit of the general reworking of the schedules.

....yes, ridiculous that it will surely, without doubt, beyond any apprehension.....go back to normal ....soon....

“I'm not sure what these complainers listen to, Radio Three or an imagined version of it. Yes! it has to move with the times a bit and recognise the changing musical landscape, but it is not that different from how it's been since the 1970s, how do I know? Well I have tapes I've made of programs over the years, and I have inherited my Fathers old tapes. Maybe there are a few more regional accents on R3 - but so there should be. As R3 is an expensive service to run it does have to demonstrate that it is still developing new audiences and still matters. People need to defend Radio Three, as it might not survive the anti BBC brigade for long otherwise. People don't do elitist anymore, it's the 21st Century now!”

Your tapes show Radio 3 broadcasting swathes of extracts from compositions, rather than complete works? That's not what I find on my tapes from that era.

So presumably we no longer need to train footballers, athletes, etc.

Yes it’s extraordinary how in sport and on TV a sporting elites are lauded , fetishised , indulged and celebrated. But anything along those lines culturally or intellectually is decried. I almost wonder whether it’s one of the few lasting legacies of fascism...

Who picks up on the old chestnut about regional accents, as if many of "these complainers" are hung up on accents. He/she will be saying next that the complainers want announcers to be dressed in formal black tie when on air.

As for 'expensive to run' - it depends how you do your calculation and that's purely political. Last year's annual accounts show that of the five network radio stations the least was spent on R3. Ah, yes, but the important thing is not how much it costs but how much it costs per listener hour. No, it isn't, because the Asian Network costs more, and the Welsh and Gaelic services cost much more per lh. R3 cost 5p per lh, the Asian Network 6p, Radio Wales 9p, Radio Cymru 23p, Radio nan Gàidheal 26p (Radio Scotland cost 41p, but that apparently doesn't count). They cherrypick the figures to make R3 seem very expensive.

In short, it sounds like someone who would argue that there's too much classical music on Radio 3 for the 21st century.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I found some of those in the attic when clearing the house prior to moving. Lacking the computers to use them I chucked them... But seriously, how can recordings of R3 programmes from the 70's be considered "not that different"?

For starters BCs did not feature in the 7am to 9am slot or anywhere else in the schedules until the 1990s when it became commonplace on CFM.

I remember Ferney’s evidence of the considerable changes in Radio 3 since the 1970s: taken from Radio Times listings of the 70s. Whole works from the start of the day onwards (and no chummy jabbering, though the listings are no evidence of that.

The “regional accents” thing is irrelevant.
