Also irrefutable: while of course we are spared the Tom Service Show, or whatever you please (or don't please).

Was even the "Bark before 8" pun relevant?

The Beethoven Mandolin Sonatina was worth hearing (it used to be the theme to World Service's "Good Books")
Perhaps Monty and Ned are going to perform the Flower Duet.

I judge a programme by the content. I don't listen to Essential Classics, whoever's presenting it. If I like the look of an evening concert, or something on Classical Live is of interest, I'll listen (usually via Sounds in the latter case). If, say, Martin Handley is presenting, that's a bonus. If I don't fancy a concert, it doesn't matter to me who's presenting it' 'cos I won't be listening. I think all of the presenters on Through The Night are fine, but the music is what counts first and foremost..

You might be confusing Monty with Bob Flowerdew, even if like him I'll get a bit of carpeting for saying so.

We live in the age of the Presenter. Over Tv and most radio , they have pushed themselves to the front in a plague of hubris engendered by their resentment at anyone else being ithe limelight: one ,ight callit a victory of style over content.

'It's my show!' shouted Jane Garvey silencing a guest on Woman's Hour who dared to disagree with her. Inevitably this has spilled over into Radio 3, amd while I accept what anton says about the focus of Radio3 I do feel that more and more we're feeling that what we hear is steered and shaped by the person who controls (hogs?)the microphone.

We all have our likes and dislikes. I've spoken up for EA when others criticise her, but I have to say I don't have the high opinion of TMcK others display.

So why, I wonder, all those trails using multiple presenter voices? I suspect it's to excite in the listener 'Ooh I like Tom Service's voice, so I'll definitely have Radio Three on, on Saturday morning'.

Well, there is a bit of that, maybe, but it reminds me of the 'Blue Peter ' style announcements on Virgin Trains, where the three voices (carefully selected to include one woman and one ethnic minority person) each had a line to say . I regard it as just one more nuisance of this crazy century: cheer up, only 75 more years to go.

And carefully posed photographs. Or even the necessity to tell us who the 'announcer' is unless they are 'presenter-grade'.The one thing a 'presenter' could do is to speak knowledgeably about the music - that is, the one thing most of R3's day-time programmes fail to do. Presenter + snippet. And it seems, even in this hallowed hall, there are listeners who aren't interested in anyone 'talking about music' - they prefer birdsong or someone striding through the Peak District and telling them how it feels. I've no problem with listeners preferring that style as long as they display an inkling that there's more depth to life than easy listening, dishwashers and Scandi noir.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
