Yes, lovely segue in to Jenufa from Mitridate - looking forward to hearing it.
    (& apologies for my grocer's apostrophe )

I remember marvelling at an instant's successfully implemented decision to substitute a recording of a movement from a Ginastera ballet suite at the precise moment the satellite signal failed during a simulcast concert from Buenos Aires. This happened many years ago. Someone must literally have been standing next to the announcer, LP on turntable, ready to place the needle, and I recall thinking, at the time, how did they know???

Most live relays used to be backed up by a performance of the same work on tape. The discs / tapes / diigital files are usually run 30 secs behind the live version . This would be for longer works. If the link to the Resurrection symphony fails you don’t want to be filling with Chopin mazurkas. Don’t know how things work now but in vinyl days in continuity the announcers cued up the records with a engineer looking after the tapes . I guess now it all happens at the click of a mouse…

My introduction to Goetterdaemmerung was when it was due to be broadcast live from the new Sydney Opera House, and the link failed. This must have been early '70s. The link was never restored so I think I must have been introduced via the Solti recording.

Granny’s Attic: The Death of Nelson
Why do folk singers adopt that whiney, nasal semi-Estuary voice? Where does that come from?

They don’t all - as in all genres the human voice comes in varying dimensions and timbres - some you like and some you don’t - all a question of personal taste!

I haven't heard the piece, but I can imagine the voice sound you describe in a folk setting

Now Malcolm Arnold has been credited by R3 as having composed the Colonel Bogey March.

I think the point being made is that there's a tendency for certain genres to gravitate towards a certain accent.
                      Classical music = RP British
Popular music = US English, but this is far from being universal. The Beatles would never have gone down that long and winding road.

This was apologised for and credit given to Kenneth Alford later, in fairness.

Real name Lieutenant Ricketts , a DOM of the Royal Marines .
Interesting story behind the name . He would whistle a minor third rather than shouting “Fore” when playing golf. And that interval opens the theme ….

In which case I’ll modify and simplify my response to a factual ‘they don’t’!

Thank you: inspired me to learn more about both the march and its composer. Always something to learn from contributors.

I think I've heard it often enough to think of it as the default style.
