I found it rather atmospheric, myself. The geography/geology/topography* is also very interesting.

Same here - after a while I realized that, although my radio was switched on, I wasn't actually listening.

I can scarcely believe - even though I had heard it with my own ears, and now double checked and verified on Sounds - that a Radio Three presenter could introduce Vivaldi's Bassoon Concerto with the words '[Lip-smacking noise] Now then, baroque bassoon klaxon - you've been warned'.

But of course this was Elizabeth Alker, who has perhaps been briefed to remember that people not familiar with 'classical music' think the bassoon a funny old thing, much associated with uncontrollable broomsticks and the like, and to acknowledge that in announcements, so that they keep drifting away from CFM et al.

I put Breakfast on in the kitchen while doing other stuff, slightly against my better judgement, but thought i'd give it another try. But even after all this time the patronising, sing-song nursery school teacher tone has not gone.

I think that was my last try.

One of the great instruments the bassoon I always think - the understated and underheard heroes of the woodwind choir . What do they say - “if own one you can earn a living , if you can play it you can make a fortune”

In my years as a teacher of woodwind, the trickiest instrument by far was the bassoon. I injured my left hand thumb when playing the bassoon in 2008, and had to stop playing it for good. (The injury took several years to heal completely.)

Have just finished Petroc and the teams magical journey on Sounds and to me it deserves some sort of an award as does the Great Man himself …… only MVVHO of course ……

It was great radio listening (IMVVHO too, of course!) Proof that Auntie can still do these things well if she wants to.

Which of course makes it so tiresome that she doesn't... My concern is the risk it will be seized on and completely the wrong idea of why it was a) successful and b) so well liked by listeners will be taken from it and regurgitated into some horrible mutation, to the detriment of any further decent projects.

As the years go on Petroc has become one of the best, probably the best R3 presenter - the Yorkshire week was lovely. He appeared totally at ease with the surroundings, his interviews were thoughtful, not hurried and informative.
No complaints about this morning’ Breakfast either. Kate Molleson’s gentle style and accent a perfect fit for morning listening - most of the music choices were good too.
(Less said about the singing in the Mendelssohn that ended Through the Night the better)

It just reminded me of my mate Arthur, aged 12, singing it from the pulpit at the School Carol Service, stopping after the first verse and saying (to all the assembled parents, pupils, staff) "I've forgotten".
(He was rescued and allowed to continue, IIRC )
