Anyone else catching A Yorkshire River Journey? We've had some Old Hall Manuscript, some Bach and currently some wondrous 14th Century piece 'Kyrie Cuthbert Prece' (now finished - replaced by some Mendelssohn).

Yes, I've been enjoying so far but have to leave for work soon. The Bach from the Minster Choir was magical!

Being back on Island I have about 15 minutes pre 9am whilst waiting for a bus - I have been very pleasantly surprised by the format of the Breakfast program this week - intelligent comments and interesting choice of music with quite clever links to the week's theme - no gush etc at least in the 15mins I catch.

Yes - and a most enjoyable and instructive trip it's turning out to be!

It has indeed been enjoyable, there has evidently been some intelligent and productive thought gone into putting the programmes together. Petroc has been an ideal presenter and companion for the trip and I get the feeling he is enjoying himself, not in an intrusive bouncy dog way, but simply pleasure at what he is seeing and hearing. Well done to all involved in bringing this to us.

Widespread enthusiasm/consensus here for a weekday Breakfast programme? I can't recall anything like it here. Careful, if the programme controllers read this thread, they'll surely put a stop to the trend to half decent programming.....
(As we all know, on the principle that if it appeals to us, its appealing to the wrong target audience....)

It's a risk worth taking in the hope that the likelihood of those that matter reading/hearing of the positive response is greater than the chance of those with the power doing so?

I believe this is the third such week of 'Breakfast' programmes, as Petroc has previously explored a forest and followed another river. It's absolutely fascinating to hear music placed so skilfully in its social, geographical and historical contexts. The knowledge and enthusiasm of all the local contributors are a real delight, and I completely agree with oddoneout's assessment of the presenter's key role in achieving such a splendid series of broadcasts. Off to Spurn Point tomorrow!

5 stars to Petroc and the team. His description from the top of the Minster tower was masterly, backed up by his pictures on Twitter. Great to hear the choir warming up in that generous space, soaring to their top register, and the grand finale on organ.

Oh dear! That’s probably the most depressing place on earth.

Well even for those who might agree that won't matter too much for radio, so long as the music etc is up to scratch. Our imaginations can provide suitable pictures if North Sea sand spits don't appeal.

Indeed, but I was even more taken by the recording earlier in the programme of the "tooting" of a queen bee, something I hadn't even heard of let alone heard, so something learned today. We've had 2 bee swarms at work in the past week so now I'm imagining the tooting in the wall where the main colony is this year prior to moving on to pastures new. Fortunately in both cases it was possible to close off the area to the public until a beekeeper could come and collect them, but bee swarms and wasp nests are a regular occurrence, the wasp nests being more of an issue in terms of meeting the conflict between the wish to preserve wildlife and the need to avoid potential problems for visitors; it isn't always possible to route people away from a nest.
