Perhaps PT is less of a gasper, but more of one who takes breaths where no punctuation is needed, but doesn't take a breath, when there should be a full stop.

I've made a point of listening to Petroc for longer than usual this morning, and honestly can't fault his presentation. He may even manage to wean me away from the 'Today' programme from time to time!

Petroc is one of the better presenters on Radio 3. Georgia Mann is another.

I think even his German is improving...

Well, I listened too and the inappropriate breathing gaps continue:

              William - breath - H - breath - Dawson

That is his style: Wigmore - breath - Hall, Essential - breath - Classics.

But I have warmed to his style over the years. I agree he could pay more attentio to the period.

We should all pay attentio to detail!

Attentio is a term from medieval Italian rhetoric theory.

                        (Cf allegro etc.)

                        Edit: I should say mediaeval.

Actually, you could just have said rhetoric , since attentio has been there since Quintilian at least.

Well the "style" infected Rob Cowan too. I had assumed that it was part of a BBC directive: speak like a Dalek, so that you never appear to come to the end of a sentence. Then the listeners will not switch off.

The possibility that it might make them do just that was of course not considered.....
