I've often wondered about this, and hearing Ian Skelly standing in simply highlighted what seems to be a rather odd situation.

It isn't as if they have weather people reading the weather, or news people reading the news. But there seems to be a clear demarcation between presenters and continuity announcers. Ian was on continuity duty yesterday, and was therefore unavailable for presenting duty
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

The solution is simple really. If there's no suitable replacement, just play the music.

As for continuity announcers, they are a life form that evolution should have ignored.

I assume the rule is that there is a continuity announcer on duty is so that s/he can step in if there is a total breakdown in systems. Although I have once heard a prerecorded announcement along ne quittez pas lines. So I think they have evolved to preserve listeners from supposing that a break in transmission signals apocalypse.

The continuity announcer's rôle can be elevated into an art-form; the trouble is that it can equally descend into the R3 link-speak equivalent of the hysterical audience responses on Sickeningly Dumb Prancing which I was initially convinced were canned until discovering to my horror that they're actually live.

Oh, what a joyous week! 'Afternoon on 3' and the ever magical Penny Gore. There is none better. Well, it's between her and Ian Skelly of course. The two most wonderful presenters we presently have. What a difference a voice can make!

I'll have a pint though, if that's all right!

Does one of those require a double bass? (fhg will know why I ask - or at least what I'm talking about and how unwarrantably far off the topic it is!)...

Anyway, I'll make it a sexorum as long as FF deems that to be acceptable and not in violation of the forum rules...
