Some excellent stuff on that clip.

Yes, indeed. I was referring exclusively to Breakfast, this being the thread devoted to that programme.

        Skelly Alert: Thursday 10th

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

And just as I thought it couldn't get any worse, we had Victoria Meakin "presenting" a soupy Radio 2 version of "I feel Pretty".

              It was indeed truly appalling!

Great lead into Record Review! I bet Andrew enjoyed it … and all the listeners just tuning in for RR

Nice to be told that the programmes's producer is a 'big fan' of the Puppini sisters. And that 'I Feel Pretty' is one of the presenter's 'all time favourites' (NB I believe it ). No doubt they all enjoyed it in the studio. What's the betting we'll be told that there were so many listeners emailing, texting and tweeting 'More please' that bit by bit we'll get their whole new album? That's the usual script when they play something appalling!
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

No it wan't; it was the Puppini sisters doing what they do very well, and I'm glad to have had it drawn to my attention.

                    Each to their own, then.
For me, it was a complete travesty.
If they want to 'do what they do' perhaps they could do it without ruining a gem of a composition (even when taken out of context and presented as a 'song'!).
You'd love one of your favourite Stabat Maters given their treatment, I assume.

In other words, you enjoyed it. That doesn't stop 'it' [sic] being appalling to others in the context.

No. But if views are expressed as fact, I can express my contrary views in the same terms.

Actually, I agree that Radio 3 wan't the best place for it - but I wouldn't have thought the original fitted particularly well there either, being (IMO of course) rather less than a gem, and soupier than the close-harmony treatment we heard.

I quite like the Puppini Sisters but that arrangement and delivery was not amongst their best. As for the original - the film soundtrack version with Marnie Nixon dubbing for Natalie Wood and I also like Kiri on the Bernstein studio recording from the 80s.
When it comes to America I love the Tatiana Tryanos or in memory of Keith Emerson the Nice!

I suppose we'll now get "Nutrocker" and "Saturday Night at the Duck Pond".

Well, I hope that the Bernstein estate did well out of the deal. Given the restrictions they place on performances of West Side Story, I'm surprised that they sanctioned this 'close-harmony treatment'.
