Have they asked anybody to tweet thoughts about the double standards represented by the warm welcome that Robert King's recordings and performances get on R3?
    On again this morning.
Which kind of grates with me, and oddly, rather more on a Sunday.
    Which is illogical, I accept.

It is the double standards that grate, not that convicted offenders should be able to rehabilitate, which is obviously important.

Sorry, it was on Sunday Morning, not Breakfast.

Sorry, what is the 'double standard'?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I agree with French Frank. What are you calling a 'double standard'?

I agree with you but do feel praise might be damning for them. I see that Martin is off next weekend and we are getting one of the subs and Petroc is back on Monday.

Gary Glitter and the Lost Prophets singer have been effectively blacklisted on Radio, as has Jonathan King.
King did actually get the BBC to apologise for editing him out of old TOTP repeats.
The BBC explicitly banned Lost prophetsm so that Watkins should receive no royalties from BBC airplay while in prison.

Glitter is no longer in prison, and nor is Jonathan King, and seems an similar case to R King, other than that his conviction was abroad.

You don't see much of any of their music on BBC these days. But Robert King encounters no such issues.

And I haven't heard much of Jonathan Rees Williams on the BBC recently either. He is apparently unable to get any opportunities in music either.
Maybe there are subtleties that I am missing.

Thanks for your reply, I now understand. Although, with the exception of Gary Glitter I am not familiar with the others mentioned.
I cannot and will not make any defense for Robert King. However, is it right to punish the members of the Kings Consort for his crimes? I think not. It is fair to ban an individual but I can't see banning a group of individuals for the crimes of one.

It is, I accept, a complicated area.
There have been strong (and understandable) suggestions that the other members of Lost Prophets are being unfairly punished by the BBC ban , which I think is designed to last as long as Watkins is in prison. This is a somewhat similar position to the members of the Kings Consort.

it really is the , to me, very clear double standard that is the issue. Those who have paid their penalty must be allowed to rehabilitate, but the very powerful BBC (and other media outlets) seem to have selective memories, and inconsistent policies.

I don't know. Perhaps there's a yardstick as to how serious the offences are judged? Gary Glitter was a recidivist. Jonathan King had a long prison sentence. JR-W I hadn't heard of anyway.

There is though a difficult line to be drawn between rehabilitation and acceptance of people who have served their sentence. A lot may be to do with how far individuals are prepared (rightly or wrongly) to work with ex-offenders. The Lost Prophets singer seems to have been guilty of more serious offences that Robert King - unless you are going to take the view that all sex offences against children are equally criminal.

I am certainly the last to defend the BBC. I am sure the event planners can if they like not book the Kings Consort. I am not clear on the sentence or post sentencing mandates that Robert King received. And I am not a legal eagle.

Maybe Glitter and JK's absence is due to musical reasons (for which we can all be truly grateful).

I wouldn't be so sure that Robert King is not still suffering from a relative lack of performances on Radio 3. On the Purcell BAL last week, the reviewer clearly indicated that the best overall conspectus of Purcell was that of the King Consort, yet the programme concentrated on other performances, with barely the briefest mention of King.

So double standards? I think this is a conspiracy theory too far.

Well you may well be right That R King is suffering continuing lack of opportunities. It's not apparent to me, but if it is going on, perhaps that is wrong.
The issue of what I called Double Standards, which maybe needs a better description, is any any case a live one, given ongoing legal activity in this area, and with particular reference to the BBC.

I'm not sure this is particularly to do with conspiracy theory. there are some pretty clear statements from the BBC on Lost Prophets, for example.

oh , and I for one still think that " I didn't know I loved you till i saw you Rock and Roll" is a fine record. As no doubt is much of robert King's output !

Another point is that performers in the pop music industry go out of fashion in a way that classical musicians don't.

I do find the fact that Robert king has been rehabilitated with such ease by Radio 3 rather distasteful especially as it seems that he was convicted of offences against a 12 year old boy .

I wouldn't buy a King's Consort record and I am surprised that the BBC continues to praise his recordings but then again the Prince's Trust apparently had a concert with them last year . As for the members of the King's Consort they chose to have him back and should take any consequences .

RK is presumably on the relevant register. Having been found guilty, sentenced, served time and been judicially released back into the community, I feel he should be given full opportunity to rehabilitate himself. There again, I am happy to listen to performances of the works of the likes of the murderer Don Carlo Gesualdo, and indeed Lully, reportedly a rampant paedophile.

Presumably the praise is for the musical, artistic & technical qualities of the performance, rather than its morals?
