I visited Kenmare a few years after Andrew Rose's piece in that link and met with Maureen O'Shea whose picture and bar is featured. She and her husband knew Moeran and essentially gave me the same stories as Andrew had heard. I was also introduced to a barman at the largest hotel who egnimatically referred to a cache of Moeran archive material stashed away somewhere...

Frau Alpeninfonie likes to have the radio alarm set to Radio 3. Normally it starts before Breakfast begins, but it was set for 6.45 a.m. this morning. An Albinoni oboe concerto woke me up. I wanted to kick the radio, not because of the presenter, but because R3 has a fixation on vibrato-free string playing whenever they choose baroque or classical recordings. The listeners are told what they should listen to, presumably because of the myth that string vibrato is unHIPP. I say string vibrato because the oboe soloist had no such inhibitions. The lack of consistency in the whole argument is infuriating.

I believe that I heard this - or a variation of it - on SMP's 'Breakfast on 3' recently. I am surprised no one has commented on it. Wherever it is being broadcast, it is not merely utterly charmless but downright creepy. And it was really horrible to hear on R3.

I happened to hear a fair chunk of CFM this week, as I was in a cafe which has it on, and it strikes me that while CFM is cheerfully Phillistine, Breakfast is seriously Philistine. (See also the thread on fading music).
