(It's probably obvious but my brain isn't working: what's a BC?)
A BC is a bleeding chunk much loved in these parts.
Yes they obviously do now, in increasing numbers respond, to same day tweety/texty requests.

This is new to me. Surely the basic programme could be listed with suitable gaps for the pesky tweets, emails anhd 'chats'. Some of the latter are quite interesting but they could be lumped together to leave a programme that can be seen in advance. I HAVE seen the full list on the page when it's other people doing it, not SMP. {Nothing personal anton dear.]

Yes FF the playlists continue to be a mess. I'm sick of complaining to R3 about them, I'm convinced that they don't care about the unprofessional image this creates. This morning collection of regurgitations looks very uninspiring To put it into context, on average there is a chunk of the the Planets every 6.5 days with a Jupiter every 9 days!

Did you know on Capital FM some songs on their playlist have to be played at least once every hour?

I do because most weeks I share an office with someone who has it on the radio.

Trust me that after that you will regard being able to listen to even The Most Essentialist Classical Doodahs Ever (or whatever the programme is really called) a blessed release.(*)

According to the EC playlist(s) for today, the answer to the brainteaser What am I? was - Holst's The Planets. Whether today's programme actually played Neptune or not depends on which of the two versions of the playlist you look at.

            gj

The popular music stations have playlists e.g. Radio 2:

"The playlist contains about 30 tracks which are divided into three levels: A list which receives the most plays, between 15 and 20 per week; B list between 5 and 10 plays and up to 5 plays per week for the C list.

The Radio 2 playlist is one of the most varied of any radio station in the UK and can include albums as well as singles. Before any track can be considered it must be commercially available or be within 3 weeks of commercial availability."

But that's because they're plugging the latest releases. Radio 3 doesn't have to do that and claims not to have a playlist (unlike Classic FM). In which case the regular occurrences of The Planets and Dvorak's Slavonic Dances are pure coincidence, every time.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Well Slavonic Dances certainly outdo The Planets on R3 (one every 4.2 days), though the big winner this year looks like its going to the Debussy Preludes. There are some interesting patterns that emerge, often one of their regular pieces disappears from the schedules for several weeks or even over a month then all of sudden it reappears several times within a week or so, the Thais Meditation was a case in point, nor played for a couple of months then 4 times in just over a week. Sometimes the music of a certain well known composer can disappear from the schedules for a week then as if to make up for this we suddenly have a glut of that composer for a few days. Its this clumping together of composers/works rather than the even spread which sometimes gives the impression that we hear more of a certain work/composer than we actually do.

In a spirit of comradeship I feel obliged to out myself as the other one! All my Breakfast listening is in a "drivetime" mode though, where the current format fits reasonably well and is periodically interrupted by RDS when the traffic news is on.

Must admit however, that I am more of a "lurker" on this thread now and prefer to hang out in the Early Music or Jazz fora, where it's safer.

I think I remarked yesterday that lists were more forthcoming when Petroc is presenting Breakfast. I ate my words with my Marmite toast today. I think the first work included 'one of us' and attempted to access the schedule. There it was but no details of artists involved.

A curate's egg morning though. one of the phone calls involved a man who visited Aprahamian in West London and heard about his links with John Ireland. A friend of mine lived next door to Felix when a child and indeed her mum used to fire-watch in WW2 with him. That must have been fun. And I knew Ernest Chapman who
took Aprahamian to meet Delius in France. A mixed bag then

Surely the most appropriate presenter to whom requests for 'Jupiter' should be addressed is James Jolly?

I know I should know the answer to this, but anyway

every time they play a disc or track therefrom do they have to pay a record company for the privilege ? is there a discount if they play the same one over and over ?

that might be an argument for just playing a couple of hour-long symphonies at breakfast time - less to fork out ???????

Andrew may know more details than me on this but, yes, there are fees to be paid. They are at a much lower rate than Radio 1 and Radio 2 have to pay - one of the reasons being the size of the audience: more listeners, higher fees apparently.

Well, I've certainly not quite grasped why it's all right to play four symphony movements at breakfast time as long as they're from completely different works, but not suitable for a breakfast audience to play four movements from the same symphony, one after the other ...

Is Radio 3 acting as a PR / Publicity agent for Alison Balsom? I do enjoy her playing but.....................

What a good idea playing all of a symphonies movements one after the other - in the right order!

Well, she was a R3 New Generation Artist - so perhaps they are trying to capitalise on their investment!
