But lo and behold, this morning it was a case of 'Anybody for a bassoon concerto ...just a teeny-weeny bit?' Ah well...at least we got to hear the whole movement
    Brandenburg 4 (1st movement)
    Vivaldi Bassoon concerto (1st movement)
Hummel, Piano concerto Op 85 (Rondo: Allegro Moderato)
Schubert Symphony No 8 (1st movement) - oh well, that was half of it. Though you'd have thought they could have managed the whole of the 'Unfinished'.

Still, we know on a Sunday morning people are scurrying about, getting ready to go to church, get the children ready for ... church, getting ready to do the weekly supermarket shop. No time to listen to anything longer than 10 minutes long.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

at least give the DJ some credit that is probably at least twice the average length of those extracts played on a weekday - probably means the DJ has time to tweet and answer a few emails request more Mantovani

How long before we get 'selected highlights from Chopin's Minute Waltz'?

And just one movement from Malcolm Arnold's Little Suite for Orchestra. You'd think the title of the piece would have been a clue to playing the whole thing!

Don't certain works have PRS fees due to the composer?. It must be a messy business, even in this computerised age, to decide how much was played. And what about the snatches with voice-over at the beginning to tell/warn you of what is coming?

Not just to the composer but to the performers too, which is rather more tricky.

Yes of course but in my jobs I just had to deal with 'our' composers, thankfully.

Well looking at the playlist for today's Breakfast, the imagination of those selecting the music has reached new depths. I'm sure that their list of 'to be endlessly regurgitated pieces' is getting smaller by the week. The number of exctracts from 'The Planets' has already equalled last years total (it works out about one every 6.5 days) and the number of 'Jupiters' (which works on average out one playing every 9 days)has already passed it, and we've got around 12 weeks still to go in 2012! Many other pieces on their list have already passed or are close to passing last years total.

I caught a few minutes of it this morning and I see that it has now descended to playing bleeding chunks - just half of Britten's "Young Person's Guide".

It was just a bit of the original Purcell and the fugue from the Britten. It may be my hearing, but I thought the Britten, played by Rattle and the CBSO, was awful. Did anyone hear it?

Back in the 1960s I attended a concert at the Grosses Festspielhaus in Salzburg, given by the SNO under (then plain Mr) Alexander Gibson. The encore was the second half of "The Young Person's Guide". I'm not sure what the locals made of it.
Of the concert in general, the Salzburger Nachrichten report started off by saying: "The Scottish National Orchestra is not the Vienna Philharmonic". Nice to know that somebody had been paying attention.

The 'Breakfast Debate' is quite rightly eternal, but what was being played at 8:30, say, thirty or forty years ago? I can't remember myself, possibly because, as Flossie says, I was too busy getting ready to go to work, and perhaps didn't even have the time to switch on. What I should really like is an archive of Radio Times, like the Gramophone Archive, to see for myself. It could even be presented as a 'celebration' (beloved concept nowadays) of the BBC. Is there any reason why we shouldn't be reminded of what went on in the past? Or maybe there's a hoarder here who's kept all the Radio Times from 1957 to the present in his/her garage (it would surely be 'he'?) and can give me chapter and verse from, say, 10 October 1971 on Radio 3?

I uploaded this for another thread (or possibly this one) a while ago: Radio 3 on 26/06/1978

Can anything Sir Simon does possibly be awful?
