    Herbie - revealed!

I see that the very knowledgeable Herbie Goldberg, the gentleman with a memorable name and even more memorable skill in solving the Essential Classics brainteaser, has allowed himself to be photographed for the Radio 3 Blog with Sarah Walker during the South Bank Residency. Perhaps the Beeb should put him on the payroll for his rĂ´le in the controversial programme and declare him a national treasure? Does anyone on these boards confess to entering the quiz, or is it a universal "not with a disinfected bargepole"? Perhaps you're out there Mr Goldberg?

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

If I'm around I do sometimes sneakily listen to the brain teaser, but nowadays I only listen to the programme when Rob Cowan is at the helm. With him you sometimes get an item that's longer than ten minutes.

He's "the one and only" - it did cross my mind lots perhaps adopted his name as a user name. I hear this programme very occasionally in the car, he added quickly.....

Why is the Brain Teaser universally despised on these threads?

The level of difficulty does vary considerably, in an effort, one assumes, to keep everyone happy. Sometimes it's quite subtle, but the other day we were invited to guess the identity of an irascible deafening composer, and it wasn't a trick question! I doubt that the learned HG soiled his hands with that one.

As I recall, we were invited to guess not only the identity of the composer described but also that of the writer describing him...not quite so obvious, I think.

Aah! I missed that - point taken, in that case. It was interesting to hear the writer's description anyway, I must admit. Today's "guess the mode of transport" (Bydlo) was a bit on the easy side, though, even for a Monday morning. And I thought Bydlo was something to do with Auction TV....

They do seem to make the challenge more difficult as the week progresses. One mildly wicked pleasure I have is in crowing when there's a simple answer, but contestants send in absurd guesses. It's the same thing with University Challenge, when contestants usually reveal abysmal ignorance when classical music questions appear. Of course, if wasn't reasonably informed about music, but a real enthusiast for history, say, or ornithology, wrong answers about birds would make me feel just as self satisfied.

Ditto Brain of Britain R4 quite often. Re ornithology, everyone should know a bit about these marvellous creatures IMHO!
