I see that the very knowledgeable Herbie Goldberg, the gentleman with a memorable name and even more memorable skill in solving the Essential Classics brainteaser, has allowed himself to be photographed for the Radio 3 Blog with Sarah Walker during the South Bank Residency. Perhaps the Beeb should put him on the payroll for his rôle in the controversial programme and declare him a national treasure? Does anyone on these boards confess to entering the quiz, or is it a universal "not with a disinfected bargepole"? Perhaps you're out there Mr Goldberg?

If I'm around I do sometimes sneakily listen to the brain teaser, but nowadays I only listen to the programme when Rob Cowan is at the helm. With him you sometimes get an item that's longer than ten minutes.Comment

The level of difficulty does vary considerably, in an effort, one assumes, to keep everyone happy. Sometimes it's quite subtle, but the other day we were invited to guess the identity of an irascible deafening composer, and it wasn't a trick question! They do seem to make the challenge more difficult as the week progresses. One mildly wicked pleasure I have is in crowing when there's a simple answer, but contestants send in absurd guesses. It's the same thing with University Challenge, when contestants usually reveal abysmal ignorance when classical music questions appear. Of course, if wasn't reasonably informed about music, but a real enthusiast for history, say, or ornithology, wrong answers about birds would make me feel just as self satisfied.Originally posted by Lento View PostComment
