It would be nice to have programmes about non-Western musics - their histories, social contexts and purposes, their age, how they pass from generation to generation, influences between them and effects of (trans)migration, Western influences (idiomatic, economic and political) - rather than what often comes across in braodcasts and at Womad etc as mere tasting sessions, charming picturesque bits of this followed by bits of that divorced from context.

Or just have a Radio 3 Extra?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

              Serial, I agree.
As for WOMAD, I think coverage of the festival has had its day.

Exactly what I had in mind in Msg #37: "The brief for world music would be much wider to include more global traditional forms (classical and folk)."

One of the best features I remember since 'world music' appeared on Radio 3 was a feature on one of the New Year's Day 'World Music Days' when there was an item about Arabic Music with a specialist speaker. It was quite short but the subject would merit a whole series.

The special BBC way would be to send a regular presenter, plus production team, to the Arabian peninsula and talk to/record traditional musicians. A cheaper way would be to get a specialist to write/present some programmes with readily available recordings.

Your suggestion should be taken up for one programme or month ( or perhaps more )

Derek Jewell was a big YES fan IIRC.
Also 10cc and Weather Report. Dare I suggest that in place of the late Derek Jewell, Stuart Maconie might do a decent job of it!

If I took over what would I do? Broadcast concerts intact instead of mangling them.

Earlier posts have including some good suggestions for forum members to take over Radio 3 roles.

I would like to volunteer to host Breakfast. I don't like talking or texting and never tweet.

Though it should at least be debated (if only to maintain one's views) that when Sounds Interesting was on, there were only three BBC music stations - Radio 1, Radio 2 and Radio 3. There are now also 1Xtra, 6 Music and the Asian Network. So why on Radio 3 at all (I just pose the question)?

Listeners who use only AM/FM receivers on average tune in to 2.9 stations per week; with DAB that rises to 3.5. So what is the principle that would now have such a programme hosted by, say, Stuart Maconie, on Radio 3?
