This isn't even last Saturday's matinee - it's a recording from December (?) last year.

I don't think I can bear to listen to the last act & have the last exquisite moments ruined by applause as the end of the first act was. Juntwait even commented how the curtains started to close during the final notes & didn't finally come together until the very last note - as if that was a great thing to do, & totally oblivious of how the curtain coming down triggers applause & ruins the end!

This is not uncommon as a dramatic device - perhaps not 'great', but often effective. I've seen it often done at Covent Garden, where the audience is generally more respectful of the music than the often tiresome folk at the Met .

It is extraordinary how most of the radio listings and even the Radio 3 website are adamant that the performance we are hearing took place last Saturday when in fact it was three months ago. How can they all have got it so wrong?
Edward Gardner continues to shine in this work -thought he was impressive at ENO but this is even better.
