    Ed Gardner to leave ENO

It has finally been announced that Ed Gardner is to leave his post as Music Director at English National Opera, as reported in The Times this morning (£):

With no chief executive and facing an £800,000 deficit, a string of hostile reviews and cuts to its subsidy, English National Opera did not need more bad news. However, it has now lost its popular

This comes as no surprise. Despite denials at the time of the news of his appointment to the Bergen Philharmonic, the rumour in several circles was that Gardner wouldn't be able to juggle both roles. Gardner has been an excellent MD; his vital conducting has salvaged several productions. What will be really interesting - and Richard Morrison picks up on this - is how Mark Wigglesworth will take to the role.
Our chief weapon is surprise...surprise and fear...fear and surprise.... Our two weapons are fear and surprise...and ruthless efficiency....

Gardner has done an outstanding job at ENO and I feel apprehensive for Wigglesworth having to take over at a time when the finances are all over the shop. He's a fine conductor and I just hope that the ENO team and its audience give him support in settling in.

    Fingers crossed!
