The Ring Cycle in two and a half minutes

    This is rather fun:-

A short animation, with appropriately rousing musical accompaniment, which manages to condense Wagner's magnificent 15-hour epic, Ring Cycle – complete with gods, heroes, dragons, a castle in the sky, love triangles, magic swords and Valkyries – into a succinct, coffee-break friendly two and a half minutes. Get it? Got it? Good!

Mr Pee quotes from The Guardian. More than half an hour ago. As far as I can tell, though, the world has yet to some to an immolatory end...

Seriously, though - thanks for this! Anna Russell (who died in Australia a few years ago) would surely have been highly amused by it.

I'm not so sure that she would have been amused, given that all the best jokes in it are lifted from her routine without attribution.

Are they? I didn't realise. It has been so long since I heard Anna Russell's routine.

But it is still rather fun, with the sketching and the quick voice over. I think she would have appreciated it.

There is a shorter, low-budget version than the above:

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

I've seen 'The Ring' summed up in a single sentence. I dont know who said it.

"The terrible consequences that ensue when a God defaults on the mortgage."

Actually, I hadn't - and should have - thought of that; perhaps her Estate will sue for copyright infringement.

No curse motif....no Wotan's Farewell.....how can you have a mini Ring without those two??

I doubt it. I am sure they have better things to do than sue an Opera company.

Why? Do you know them personally? You could very well be right, of course, but stranger things have happened at sea...

Well, they wouldn't be, as the video is by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. & surely suing for infringement of copyright is core to the work of the estate which is supposed to look after the copyright of a person's work, & the income derived from that work?

Ok, sorry I got the company wrong. It might have had something to with the typically sloppy editing of the Guardian website, who popped a link to the Sydney Opera House next to the article.

And I really do think one or two people are over-reacting here. Anna Russell's routine was as much about her piano playing and the music aspect as the actual jokes, most of which have been repeated ad infinitum over the years anyway, whenever anyone cracks a joke about the Ring. This is a couple of minutes of light entertainment to promote a "bleeding chunks" concert. It may just draw in some new listeners and possibly some of them might go on to develop a real love for Wagner's music.

Like I said, I am quite sure the Anna Russell estate have better things to do than to mean-spiritedly go after the Orchestra over something so trivial.
