The wonderful, vivacious Arlene Phillips is, believe it or not, 70 today!

... an auspicious day indeed. Today is the 200th birthday of Rossini's l' Italiana in Algeri - 22 May 1813 in Venice

              .

You're right. I should have said Katie Price.

In a pleasing Wagnerian coincidence it's also the birthday of the American tenor James King who was such a splendid Siegmund amongst many other roles.

(I understand he is a popular musician, members of the jury )

                        The current top ten are:

                        1. Eddy Merckx

                        2. Adolphe Sax

                        3. Herge (George Remi)

                        4. Audrey Hepburn

                        5. Plastic Bertrand

                        6. Peter Paul Rubens

                        7. Rene Magritte

                        8. Georges Lemaitre

                        9. Albert Claude

                        10. Leo Baekeland

Yes, Audrey was a surprise to me too... but she was born Edda van Heemstra Hepburn-Ruston in Brussels.

Raiding the wiki page, I think GĂ©rard de Nerval probably deserves a mention though I do have an irresistible urge to mention Rajah Ram Mohan Roy, who died and is commemorated in Bristol.

Indeed he has a fine statue between the city library and the Council House - which we must now call City Hall
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

But you've left out Patrick Sercu, and no mention of Tom Boonen, Philippe Gilbert, or Axel Merckx!

I like their Beer!! I have spent a few lovely evenings in the Brussels Grand Place, sampling the extensive selection of delightfully strong and flavoursome ales whilst admiring the glorious architecture, which only seems to get more glorious as the evening progresses.....

By the way, I would add Jacky Ickx to that list of famous Belgians!!
