Just got back from Medea (Charpentier) at the ENO. A wonderful evening, I can’t praise
it too highly. One of the best opera productions in London for a long time. A
magnificent cast, headed by the superlative Sarah Connolly. The opera itself is
very fine, with a compelling libretto by Corneille’s brother. The set and
lighting were extremely handsome and greatly added to the pleasures of the
evening. Very good production by MacVicar, which succeeded in integrating the
extensive dance characteristic of French Baroque opera. As a review said rather
pointedly, “it is a pleasure to see effective choreography, unlike some recent
productions at a nearby opera house in London”.
The auditorium was disappointingly empty; the ENO deserve a better
response. Do go.
