    ROH advice please - urgent!

Just discovered I shall be in London at the same time as Juan Diego Flores - very few seats left, the only cheap ones are very cheap, slips at the sides of the amphitheatre - how awful are they?

Otherwise, since most of what's left is much the same (exorbitant) price, where is best?

Is this for La donna del lago, Jean? Which date?

What seat number is it? Upper Slips or Lower Slips? I've done Upper Slips before a couple of times, but as someone who doesn't get on with heights in any way, shape or form, it wasn't a great experience. Lower Slips might be less of a problem.

Which date(s) are you looking for?

    (Sorry... lots of questions.)

The ROH website should let you see the view of the stage from the seat you 'select'.

The ROH booking site will give you a view as if from your seat when you are choosing what to buy. In terms of overall sound and balance, the front of the Amphitheatre is best. I very often find the balance uneven in the stalls (orchestra covers some voices) - stall circle is better.

Thanks. It's May 20th. There's nothing in the amphitheatre except those slips, and as I hardly ever get the chance to go there, I can splurge vast amounts as a one-off.

I have gone for stalls circle, and I've got another 20 minutes or so to pay, so I'll wait a bit and see if more advice comes along...

The slips nearest the rear of the auditorium are usually sold out - they have a reasonable view. Ones further forward than, say, 30% or so of the way towards the stage are progressively likely to have a restricted view of the stage (this is a concert performance, isn't it? - so it depends who is where on the front of the stage?). The sound should be good, though. I enjoy live performance - the sound in ROH is reasonably immediate and completely different from radio broadcast sound (very different from the Coliseum - although I avoid the rear of the RoH amphitheatre (and, generally, the Coliseum)).
Last time in the slips for me was Domingo's Operalia Winners and the sound was fine.

Do you always have to buy a whole box?

                  Thanks everone.

I've done it now, so no more advice, please!

The first time I saw JDF was when he took over at short notice in Pesaro in Mathilde de Shabran..

The second time was when, having failed to get a seat for La Fille du RĂ©giment at the ROH I happened to be in Vienna, and there it was. A lot cheaper, too!

                      Excellent news.

I'm due there on opening night (17th) with a keen sense of anticipation. Interesting to see what they do with it production-wise - the ROH rejected the original co-production and have mounted their own. If only they'd taken a similar stance concerning Rusalka... <sigh>

Stalls circle is my favourite area in the ROH and the best value in my experience .

Stalls Circle by the stage/ dangling over the pit is fabulous - A13 my favourite seat in the House, but since the days of Premium Friends (or 'Special' Friends as I like to call them) it's usually been snapped up well before I can get to it. :(
