Not in my view, but his Messiaen and Ives definitely deserve high praise.

A couple of tremendous Turangalîlas leap to mind, especially one with Yvonne Loriod and her sister swooping and tinkling away like good 'uns, Andy looking thrilled to bits

Her CD - Play deserved a career as a coaster . The recommendation by Hilary Finch has made me very suspicious of that reviewer .

I think Hans Hotter rather than Andrew Davis can take the credit for how memorable that Gurrelieder is !

A Birtwistle Piano Concerto with Mcgregor and Davis ! The CIA would never have needed torture by waterboarding if that had been available .

              Seconded.

This was an exceptional evening at Covent Garden, and yes on 2nd hearing the woirk felt stronger than in 2007, and although John Tomlinson was truly remarkable, the singing of Christine Rice was the high point for me, she made her part so beautifully lyrical.

I enjoyed it , if that is an appropriate word for such an intense experience, even more than my previous trip to see Les Troyens

I've seen/heard it twice now and feel I'm getting closer to what HB's on about but a further ten listens/views will be required I'm sure. The ROH programme is a wonder
There was an interesting article in the Guardian yesterday written by one of the understudies:

Don't feel sorry for understudy Richard Scott. Waiting, listening, and watching in the wings every night means he gets to know and love the best of contemporary opera

In it he describes the pleasures of following every performance and the deepening understanding he has gained from this. As he says:

"It reveals itself slowly like a labyrinth of leitmotifs and vivid orchestration. Each day I hear something new which intensifies my love for contemporary opera."

I went last week, having seen it first in 2008 (and having watched the blu ray a few times since then). Not a conventionally enjoyable evening, but an immensely rewarding one.
"I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

A tremendous piece and Sir John Tom revisits his triumph in title role ... unmissable at these prices
I missed it unfortunately - but the entire opera is available on YouTube.
