Imaginations? There's the partial Proms performance from 2009 or 2010. And some solace in BBC2's (Four's?) staged broadcast of the Minotaur.

Ach - I didn't get on at all with the Minotaur, tbqf. Normally I like Birtwistle & his music very much, he makes sense, but on this occasion I felt the composer had been on some kind of a rampage.

Beggin' yer parding, guvna, but isn't that rather like an enthusiast of Tristan und Isolde being told to make do with the Prelude and Liebestod and a production of Rienzi?

        Best Wishes.

Yes, I think Roger Wright should have taken the plunge and given us a complete concert performance at The Proms. I was at the RFH and at the end of Act 2 i was physically and emotionally drained. The gut wrenching power of HB's music always amazes me. Many thanks for the interesting contributions and warm words of welcome. I may go to Magdeburg in July if i can find reasonable accommodation and flights but i also intend to come down to London for the London Sinfonietta Birtwistle programme. We also have the release of David Beard's new work on Birtwistles music for the stage which is due for publication next year i believe.

I'm sure many would echo the sentiment expressed in the first 10 words of your message.

Not really. Any attempt to compare the vast musical genius of Wagner with the scratchings of Birtwistle is beyond rational comprehension.

Simon Rattle once said, about his great friend Alfred Brendel: "What you have to understand about Alfred is that, for him, apart from Purcell and The Mask of Orpheus, ALL English music is second-rate."

So, young Simon: Don't. Be. Silly.

Alfred needs to listen to the Eton Choir Book, to John Dunstaple, to Walter Frye, to John Taverner, to Thomas Tallis, to William Byrd, to John Dowland, to William Lawes, to Brian Ferneyhough, to James Dillon, to Richard Barrett, to Christopher Fox, to Derek Bailey, to Evan Parker, to John Tilbury and plenty of others, before he pronounces . Wouldn't do Simon Rattle any harm to listen to something that isn't written by his very good friends, either .

SIMON! Welcome back after so long a break. These Boards are so much the poorer without your comic genius.
