The Flying Dutchman docks at Covent Garden next week, and will be broadcast in the Opera on 3 slot on 12th November.
This is a revival of Tim Albery’s production, first seen in 2009. Egils Silins (a singer about whom I know nothing) is replacing the indisposed Falk Struckmann in the title role.
The production marks the welcome return of Jeffrey Tate to Covent Garden. He was principal conductor of the ROH during the eighties. Does anyone know the circumstances of his leaving and the reason why he has not appeared there for such a long time? He conducted the finest Ariadne auf Naxos (with Jessie Norman and Kathleen Battle) I’ve ever seen.
I shall be attending on the last night of the run. Is anyone else going?
