Good luck to the cast, composer and librettist of this new piece, which "brings a modern tale of self-destruction to the opera stage" (ROH blurb). Last Days is about a chap in a pop band, and premieres tonight at the Linbury, Covent Garden.
I was amused to hear its young composer say (on R4 Today) that "this is opera, so we don't use electric guitars and stuff". He clearly isn't aware that Michael Tippett was including precisely such "stuff" in operas written for Covent Garden fifty or so years ago.
Snobbery never dies, and surfaces in the most unexpected places!
