Quite a good piece in the NY Times giving us some clues as to what to look forwards to: "breastplates, a spear and flames of magic fire at the end. (But, sorry, no horned helmets.)". Oh and Brünnhilde as Greta Thunberg!

Oh no... can this be true? Seems to have been some sort of falling out and Anthony Negus no longer conducting a performance... He has been coaching the singers for weeks, and this happens straight after the dress rehearsal and before the show opens.

As I've indicated I don't keep much in touch with ENO but it seems unerringly set on a self destructive, downward path. Not serving its core audience and engaging in desperate gimmicks to "reach out" to a new audience. Now, some of that seems reminscent of another musical organisation...........

I suppose it’s perfectly possible there is an innocent explanation. Matthew Rose and Rache Nicholls are on In Tune now, they are full of praise for Anthony Negus’s work with them.
Hmmm In the production Rose as Wotan wears a “Canada Goose” jacket ….ominous
Mind you I’ve never trusted people who do . Hedge fund owners generally…or those given to highly leveraged property development.

No, I have had it confirmed from a distinguished soprano that his treatment has been 'absolutely disgusting'.

Interesting - but that’s the opera world all over isn’t it ?

I don’t think that should stop wrongs from being righted.

'Behind the Scenes article in the Guardian focusing on the staging. The Canada Goose wearer stereotype fits Wotan pretty well but if Brünnhilde is an ecowarrior shouldn't she be wearing Patagonia!

I see from the photos that a dummy of ‘Boris’ attached to a zip wire might make an appearance at some stage. It was also disappointing to read that Westminster Council has vetoed all of the fire effects that ENO were hoping to use. As these are pretty crucial at the end of the opera, hopefully they manage to persuade the Council to allow some effects by the time of the first night.

The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

Yes, so I hear. There were fire effects of some magnitude in the Keith Warner Ring at Covent Garden...? Same fire (magic), same council (tragic)?

I'm relieved to read the Johnson dummy (is there any other kind?) is from the current panto-style production of HMS Pinafore.

Disappointing the fire effects have had the dampener from Westminster Council, the Warner production had flames that toasted us even up in the gods.

The dummy 'Boris' appears to be integral to the current production of HMS Pinafore, though I suppose that there might be a strong temptation to include it/him in the pile of dummy warriors in act three of The Valkyrie. The Guardian article is written in a rather chirpy style by the paper's senior arts editor, with references to 'spoiler alerts', but on the whole it is rather encouraging about this production - shame about Westminster Council vetoing the fire, though! The Guardian and ENO are both keen to attract young audiences, quite properly, though sometimes at the cost of mildly irritating their older supporters. I'm going on Sunday the 28th...

Yes, they were most impressive, although I think the flames in Covent Garden’s previous Don Giovanni were even hotter than those in Die Walkure.

I’m pleased to hear that the Ring will be a Bojo-free zone. I’m going on Monday.

It seems Anthony Negus has been reinstated for 7th Dec! Hurrah. Wise of ENO...

I hope those people who tried to return their tickets when his removal from this performance was announced were either unsuccessful, or are now able to get their tickets returned!
