    Yevgeny Nestorenko 1938-2021

Sad to learn of the death earlier this month of one of the great Russian basses: https://www.prestomusic.com/classica...enko-1938-2021

He will be best remembered for the major bass parts in Russian opera, especially but by no means exclusively the title role in Musorgsky'sBoris Godunov, but he also sang a good deal of Italian opera and much else besides, as his discography shows: https://www.prestomusic.com/classica...eny-nesterenko

You might want to amend the thread title, as it suggests he died twenty years ago
"I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

His Wiki says it was a short but severe bout of Covid. I think the Kondrashin/Moscow Phil Shostakovich 14 is the only recording of his I have. Listened again to remind myself. His dark resonant bass is well suited to these death-themed movements .
