An English translation would also miss the sheer vividness of Wagner's language, purely as sound, and we know that Wagner wanted that kind of experience for the listener. Alberich's Stabreim in Rheingold is the most obvious, but Wotan killing Hunding sounds so menacing with words like 'knecht' and 'kniee' (not to mention that chilling final 'geh') spat out that any gain in translation is immediately cancelled out. And Hagen sung in English sounds totally wrong for the same reason. 'Meineid, raecht ich!' is far superior to something pallid like, 'my oath, I have avenged.'
