Rolando Panerai was a major figure in Italian opera in the 1950s and 1960s and continued singing well into his 80s. He often appeared opposite Maria Callas in the theatre and on disc, including as Amfortas in the Italian language Parsifal that also featured Callas as Kundry. His best-known role was probably Ford in Verdi's Falstaff, which he recorded more than once.
