    Handel's Agrippina: Opera on 3 19 October

Handel's early masterpiece, Agrippina, is a gripping drama of high politics and low deceit set to some of the composer's most ravishing music.
    [...]
Presented by James Naughtie with guest Elin Manahan Thomas

    Agrippina.....Joyce DiDonato (Mezzo-soprano)
    Nerone.....Franco Fagioli (Countertenor)
    Poppea.....Lucy Crowe (Soprano)
    Ottone.....Iestyn Davies (Countertenor)
    [...]
Orchestra of The Age of Enlightenment
    Maxim Emelyanychev (Conductor)
Joyce DiDonato stars as Handel's antiheroine at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

DiDonato gives one of her best performances
Joyce DiDonato gives one of her finest performances in Barrie Kosky’s witty and unnerving staging of Handel’s opera of political manipulation in ancient Rome

Fine singing though found it rather too long - however the production and the moveable 'structure' was something of a distraction but at least on the radio one is spared that.

Deservedly, applause after every aria. Rather a lot of stage noises but it’s a live performance after all.

[ed.] The interval talk almost makes you think that you are not listening to Radio 3 or time has slipped.

It would be interesting if the announcer who enthusiastically introduced the recording by saying how special this opera is could explain why if this is the case that it is performed so rarely.
