Just thinking about it terrifies me!
I once read a story about Jon Vickers singing the Teddy Bears Picnic to the young son of a friend of his who worked backstage at the ROH. That poor kid must have been traumatised for life.

Anyone bought the live Nilsson opera set ? If so any thoughts ?

I rather like her sense of humour in televised interviews and her Isolde with Bohm in particular. Her Turandot is terrifying .

Apparently she didn't get along with Karajan at all, being one of the few people to talk back to him. Even to the extent of calling him 'Herbie' and wearing a miner's helmet during a dress rehearsal of one of HvK's more stygian productions, as a kind of protest.

As I said in my original post, I bought it and have just finished listening to it.

I'd definitely recommend it, though there are a few caveats. Because all of the sources are off-air broadcasts, you do get some audience interference. This applies to the operas taped at the Met, where the Turandot is virtually ruined by the audience applauded the set (!) and basically breaking at the end of every single aria. The same goes for the Strauss - Salome/Elektra, where you can hear people attempting to applaud, even though the work is through-composed.

That said, the Karajan Walkure is probably worth the price of admission by itself (and there is a picture of Birgit in miner's helmet in the booklet!). The three Tristans (with Windgassen, Thomas and vickers, respectively) are also great, as is the Die Frau....
