Last of the 1950-1970s great sopranos . Wonderful singer time to get out her Puccini arias disc with Mackerras.

As well as having chart success with Freddie Mercury was a Queen of opera in her own right! What a powerful voice! RIP Montserrat.

At our recorded music society meeting today we had a talk on Italian opera and, quite by chance, several of the recordings featured Caballé including a splendid Casta Diva.

          RIP

Forget Freddie Mercury. She was one of the greatest singers of the 20th Century. (He wasn't.)

Freddie Mercury was one of the greatest artists of our times and should never be forgotten. RIP Freddie.

Yes: a complete surprise to me, but her Salome under Leinsdorf is utterly mesmerising.

This Casta Diva, part of an incandescent performance at a very windy Orange festival, is beautiful, as well as being an object-lesson in technique.

I was only thinking about her the other day when watching the Pappano programme about sopranos and thinking that she was the most obvious omission from the programme.

I remember reading an interview in which she said something along the lines of any soprano due to play a big role who tells you she doesn't listen to Callas's recordings is a liar.

If you don't have it I do urge anyone to get hold of her Puccini Arias record with Mackerras from about 1970 - just perfect singing.

I can only hope that it gets re-released as a tribute, as it appears to be unavailable at present. Individual tracks available on Apple Music, but not the extracts from Manon Lescaut and Le Villi.
