Has anybody seen this?
A new (2018) commission by David Sawyer, libretto by Roy Mullarkey based on the first novel (1993) by Chilean author Roberto Bolaño, a book not well received on its debut but finding favour now. The opera is a neo-noir murder mystery set in the Costa Brava, featuring a singer who can not only act but skate, too. Clearly, a lot is expected of creative artists these days:
‘Nuria, a beautiful young skating champion, has a powerful admirer, Enric, whose obsession drives him to pilfer funds to build her an ice rink in a deserted Spanish mansion. Discovered by an unlikely group of characters, a murder on the ice becomes the centre of this thrilling tale of jealousy, political corruption and the lengths we go to for the ones we love.’
The overview, together with a handful of reviews (scroll down to see them) is available on the Garsington website here:
Youtube has a Short Insight interview with composer and librettist here:
Sounds cool
