    Jurowski London Rheingold concert

Having unfortunately been unable to attend this performance last Saturday, I wonder if anyone happens to know if Radio 3 were there?

Don't think so, though there were microphones... probably for an LPO Live recording?

I hope they can tweak the levels of the recording to give Matthias Goerne some much-needed oomph (a musicology term). I enjoyed much of the performance but there was a dead centre.

To expand, I think Goerne is a great lieder singer and thoughtful artist. For whatever reason he just didn't seem to be part of this performance, emotionally or physically.

Comments below this article also share your views concerning Goerne: https://www.theguardian.com/music/20...all-ring-cycle

It seems that this might end up being released on the LSO Live label, which could explain the lack of R3 coverage. I'd like to hear Jurowski's take on Wagner, and might try to get to any future parts of the Ring cycle they do.

It would be a brave move for LSO Live to start releasing LPO recordings, but I suppose stranger things have happened

The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

I agree with the general view that Goerne was a disappointment - he sang beautifully, but did not express the authority which is essential for Wotan. There was no reason given for him needing a score when all the others did not, and this undoubtedly diminished the dramatic impact.

The anvils were stunning!! Anvils to the left, anvils to the right, anvils in front of us. This was tremendous.

Having the singers in the choir behind the orchestra made an effective acting area, but the acoustics of the RFH do not favour this arrangement. Friends told me that in the recent Opera North Ring at the RFH, the singers were at the front of the stage and this made much more impact.

Booking is already open (for South Bank members) for next year's "Die Walkure". The cast includes Goerne as Wotan. I hope he manages to learn this part - Wotan has to bestride the stage in this opera, and if he is tied to a music stand this will be ridiculous.

I do think they might have projected some rainbow colours on the organ at the end!
