    Mirga's IDOMENEO in concert

Really first-rate IDOMENEO at Symphony Hall conducted by Mirga Whatsername-Tyla, who must be the finest female conductor ever in the history of music. She really is that good!

I was worried seeing the comparatively large size of the CBSO and the enormous choir that both the excellent soloists (Rachel Kelly as Idamante and Sophie Bevan as Ilia the standouts) and the music itself might be overwhelmed, but Mirga balanced it all superbly - and with such dynamism.

IDOMENEO is by now my favourite Mozart opera. Dramatic and filled with his best music. How could it have been sidelined for so long? First professional outing in Britain was at Glyndebourne in 1951!

I would have been there but for a longstanding family commitment. A fine lineup of soloists and I'm sure fascinating to see Mirga with more than the orchestra to worry about.

She really is a star and has got the lot, a wonderful musician, brilliant in interviews and a superlative capture by the CBSO. Here are some audience tweets after the show:

And a Times 4 star review which may work for you:

★★★★☆It’s so annoying when an opera character tells us that he’s personally seen a sea monster chomping thousands of Cretans in its jaw, while the audience has

I'm seeing Mirga/CBSO at Cheltenham next Wed week, partly in order to hear the apparently 'sensational' 20 year old pianist, Jan Lisiecki.
